Everyone says fireworks are beautiful. For some kids, they're too much.
Zola sees the colours the rest of us hurry past: the green flash of dusk, a ladybug's dots, the first star while it's barely a spark. But at the Summer Night Festival the sky CRACKS open — ten fireworks, then twenty, all flash and glare.
Her dad kneels close, hands her dark sunglasses, and teaches her how to dim it down: find a calm patch of sky and count a few stars, slowly, together.
