Comfort first
Zola designed a costume that didn't pinch
The costume at the store came with a plastic mask that smelled like a new shower curtain and an elastic strap that dug in behind her ears. Zola lasted one try-on.
So she designed her own. A silver cape. A shiny silver hood, soft as a beanie, that looks exactly like a space helmet. A foil-covered cardboard control panel with a red paper flame on it, for blasting off. And the orange headphones, which, it turns out, are exactly the right shape for an astronaut's radio.
Nothing scratchy, nothing pinching, and every piece came off in five seconds if it needed to.
She wore it for three hours, then to school the next day, then to the grocery store, where the cashier asked if she had come from space. She said yes.
