  Remembering the way

Zola led the way out of the corn maze

The sign at the pumpkin farm said the corn maze takes about forty-five minutes. Dad had them completely lost in about four.

Zola wasn't worried, because on the way in she'd been saying hello to things: a scarecrow with one boot missing, a wooden wagon full of gourds, a sunflower taller than Dad.

“We passed the wagon after the scarecrow,” she said, “so the way out is back past the scarecrow.” And she walked them out backward, one landmark at a time, like a story told in reverse.

Dad would like it noted that he was letting her lead. Noted.

Try it this week: On your next walk, say hello to three landmarks on the way there. Then find them again, in reverse, on the way home.
