Zola Notices Everything

  Listening first

Zola heard the geese before anyone saw them

It was an ordinary walk home from school when Zola stopped in the middle of the sidewalk and said, “Listen.”

Dad listened. Nothing. Then, very faintly, from somewhere behind the houses: a honking, wobbling, many-voiced racket, like a tiny brass band having an argument.

A minute later the geese came over the rooftops in a long, uneven V, dozens of them, heading south and complaining about it the whole way.

Zola waved until they were dots. “They're going somewhere warmer,” she said. “I'd honk too.”

Try it this week: Listen for something before you can see it. Guess what it is, then wait and find out.
